FREE CHALLENGE / True or false
The Signal Boxes
The station code is hidden in exactly one of three boxes. Each box carries a label, but exactly one of the three labels tells the truth.
The rules
The code is in A, B or C. Exactly one label is true; the other two are false. A label can be true even when the code is in another box.
- A
- The code is NOT in A.
- B
- The code IS in A.
- C
- The code is NOT in B.
Which box contains the code?
A nudge, only if you need one
Hint 1
Test one possible hiding place at a time, and count how many labels would be true.
Hint 2
If the code were in A, labels B and C would both be true. That breaks the rule.
Reveal the answer and reasoning
Box B
- If the code were in A, label A would be false but B and C would both be true: two true labels.
- If the code is in B, label A is true, B is false and C is false: exactly one true label.
- If the code were in C, labels A and C would both be true. B is therefore the only hiding place that works.
