FREE CHALLENGE / Order and logic
The Platform Queue
The departure bell is about to ring, but the four-person boarding list is missing. Nell, Bram, Ivo and Mara each occupy one place in a straight queue.
The rules
Use each name exactly once, reading from the front of the queue to the back. Immediately before means directly adjacent, with no one between.
- 01
- Nell stands immediately before Bram.
- 02
- Mara stands somewhere after Bram.
- 03
- Ivo stands before Mara, but Ivo is not first.
What is the order, from first to last?
A nudge, only if you need one
Hint 1
Treat Nell and Bram as a two-person block. The block needs at least one space after it for Mara.
Hint 2
If that block occupied second and third, Mara would be fourth. Who would be forced into first place?
Reveal the answer and reasoning
Nell → Bram → Ivo → Mara
- Nell and Bram cannot occupy third and fourth, because Mara must stand after Bram.
- If Nell and Bram were second and third, Mara would be fourth and Ivo would have to be first. The third clue forbids this.
- Nell and Bram must therefore be first and second. Ivo comes before Mara, leaving Ivo third and Mara fourth.
